Why Hypnosis Works
A behavior becomes a habit when it’s no longer something you need to think about in order to carry out. This is beneficial in many instances – after all you wouldn’t want to have to re-learn to tie your shoes every morning! But the same process that builds positive habits also builds negative ones, and they both reside in the same place: your subconscious mind.

By working with directly with this area of your mind, the hypnotist is able to override or re-program the negative habit of smoking and the desire for cigarettes. Hypnosis is one of the most successful ways of changing bad habits like smoking because it is the easiest and quickest way to the subconscious mind.

Why Willpower Doesn’t Work
When thinking of quitting any habit, it’s human nature to think that it takes a lot of willpower. The problem with this thinking is that willpower is a function of your conscious mind.

As we’ve seen, a habit such as smoking is controlled by your subconscious mind (you don’t need to remind yourself or re-learn how to smoke). Sometimes you probably didn’t even know you were smoking – ever have one in the ashtray and one in your hand at the same time?

Therefore, using willpower (your conscious mind) to change a habit (in the subconscious mind) is like using the wrong tool for the job. In fact, the more often you rely on willpower and the more often it fails, the less success you’ll expect of yourself. If it hasn’t worked in the past, it probably won’t work now, right?

Are You Ready To Quit?
You don’t have to be at the point where you hate cigarettes – most of us never get to that point. You just have to be at the point where the bad outweighs the good: you’re tired of coughing, tired of your clothes smelling, perhaps you’ve just lost someone close to you. Whatever it is for you, somehow the scales have tipped to the point where it just makes more sense to quit than to continue.

How Many Sessions Does It Take?
Three to five. The first is an hour-long evaluative session during which I explain what hypnosis is and how it will help you successfully quit smoking. I’ll answer your questions and have you make sure you’re really ready to quit. I don’t pressure anyone into following through with the process. While hypnosis is one of the most successful methods of quitting, it requires a real commitment from someone who is ready to quit for their own reasons. Coming in because your spouse is threatening to leave or the kids are nagging you, while certainly motivating, will not produce lasting change. Your desires and motivations reside in your subconscious mind, and that’s the only area you can change.

Also during the first meeting we’ll do a short hypnosis session to introduce you to the wonderful restorative nature of the trance state. If you decide you’re ready to quit and want to follow through, we make the second appointment, usually about one week later. Before the second session I ask you to do a few things to get ready, one of which is to listen to a hypnosis/relaxation tape to familiarize you with my voice and the trance state.

We'll space the subsequent sessions approximately one week apart, going through various exercises in hypnosis to achieve the solid, measurable results you're expecting. You’ll receive your own private tape of these sessions. It’s a very important part of the process that you listen to the tape every day for at least the next three weeks to reinforce the suggestions. Most people choose to listen to the tape as they fall asleep.

Many people, when they walk out of my office after that second appointment, have absolutely no desire for a cigarette. And you could very well be one of those people. A more common experience, however, is that you may still have a little desire for a cigarette. But the difference is it’s not as strong, it doesn’t last as long, and eventually it dissipates. Listening to the audiotape is key to reinforcing your desire to be a non-smoker!

What’s The Success Rate?
The success rate is directly proportional to your motivation to quit. In the method I use I allow the person to screen themselves to see if they’re truly ready to stop smoking forever. If I were to just go out and hypnotize 100 people to quit smoking you can bet I would have a lousy success rate! If you’re unsure whether you’re really ready to quit, call for a free phone consultation.

What Does It Cost?
Sessions are $135.00, lasting about 1 hour, and include free recordings of each session as well as instruction in self-hypnosis.

Can YOU Quit Smoking Using Hypnosis?
You can change your life with the power of your own subconscious mind. There are five components necessary to induce hypnosis:

  • Motivation
You must want to be hypnotized and make changes in your life. Remember, hypnosis cannot be projected onto you by someone. It’s an agreement between you and your hypnotist to work toward your goals.
  • Relaxation
You must allow yourself to become relaxed; that means you must be willing to “let go.” Under hypnosis you never lose control, you just gain more control over your life!
  • Concentration
Under hypnosis all external distractions are tuned out and your ability to concentrate is heightened.
  • Imagination
You must be willing to use your imagination freely and visualize the outcome you desire.
  • Suggestion
Under hypnosis your subconscious mind is highly suggestible and you are able to replace negative behaviors or self-talk by suggesting new, positive alternatives.

A person with a commitment to making a change is the ideal candidate for hypnosis!

By the way...
Before I became a hypnotist I‘d tried hypnosis to quit smoking. It wasn’t successful. At the time I didn’t understand my role in the process, how important it was for me to initiate this change for my own reasons. I wish my hypnotist had helped me evaluate whether I was truly ready to quit – then neither of us would have felt like we’d failed!

Eventually I was ready, and successfully quit smoking. When I began practicing I developed a method for my clients to evaluate their own readiness. Even those who aren’t ready to begin right away find that the act of screening themselves helps motivate them to quit sooner.
