What is Past Life Regression?
It is the process of returning to a previous incarnation in order to discover the source of a hidden talent, to locate the origins of chronic illness or pain, to discover the reason for an irrational fear, to understand why you're drawn to a particular region or historical era, or to gain insight about a relationship.

Past Life Regression has been used for centuries as a healing tool. Often simply visiting the incarnation when an illness or fear started is enough to release it from your subconscious mind.

Often people use PLR as a last resort. They've tried everything to help themselves end a problem, whether it's life-threatening (like an eating disorder) or a fear they're tired of working around, such as a fear of heights or a fear of flying.

What's the process?
Using a relaxation technique similar to that of hypnosis, you will be guided by your Higher Power to a previous existence that will shed some light on your current challenge. Clients usually find themselves working out a similar problem. Because it often happens that the problem was NOT worked out in that life, it has been "brought with you" to your current incarnation so you may continue to work on it. Just visiting this time and this "you" is frequently enough to eradicate the issue completely. Other times it becomes crystal clear to the client what needs to be done to correct the problem once and for all, and once they awaken from the trance state, they are able to make the necessary changes right away, with great ease.

What kinds of problems does it help heal?
People with chronic pain, headaches, recurring illnesses, recurring nightmares -- all have been helped with PLR because they can often trace a source of pain all the way back to a previous life, where it can finally be healed.

PLR can help you in other, practical ways. Have you ever wondered why you work so hard, improving your skills and your talents using every method at your disposal, only to find you never really seem to create wealth or even some financial comfort? Vows of poverty taken in a previous life can be so strong and deep-seated that they can interfere with the prosperity your creator WANTS you to enjoy!

Other vows, such as celibacy and silence, as well as vows of poverty, are so strong because they are usually made in connection to a deeply-held religious belief in a previous incarnation. You can remove those vows if they no longer serve you in this life. If you find yourself unable to connect on an intimate level with a partner, or if you find you can never quite speak up for yourself, PLR may help you discover the source of the problem and correct it once and for all.

What will it be like?
Most people wonder if a regression will really work for them. It is only on rare occasions that clients do not bring up past life material. Instead, a memory from early childhood that seems pertinent to the issue of concern comes up, or we find that current life situations or anxieties intervene and need to be worked on first. What works best is to approach the experience with an open mind, not expecting anything in particular. (For example, if you approach a regression just knowing you’re going to discover a lifetime when you were a fighter pilot, this might get in the way of what really comes up.)

Many people expect that they’re going to see their past life vividly, in great detail. This isn’t always the case, especially when experiencing your first regression. Although some clients find they "see" things in their mind’s eye quite clearly, others may find the impressions somewhat vague, only portions coming in clearly. Information comes through in a number of ways -- physical sensations (like feeling hot or cold), hearing what people are saying around you, just knowing something intuitively all of a sudden. The best approach is to focus on the images and feelings you experience, don’t worry about whether it makes sense or is "real" or not, and trust whatever comes up at the time.

Typically, people who have a regular meditation or relaxation practice move most quickly into a past life regression experience. This shows that this is a skill that can be learned. The more you practice, the more detailed your experiences will be and the more easily memories will be recovered. However, there are also people who have never done any relaxation practice that recover detailed information quickly and easily. The only way to know how it works for you is to give it a try. It is helpful if you have a specific question or issue you would like to explore, but it can also be left open to your inner guidance to bring up a memory that has pertinence for your current life.

Case studies: Weight Loss, Abundance, Pain

Weight Loss
M came to see me for hypnosis for what she described as compulsive eating. During our very first session M expressed frustration with her current situation: her sister, who was experiencing some financial trouble, wanted to come stay with M and her (retired) husband. This sister and brother-in-law were both unemployed, and had 5 children. M knew that when her sister came to stay it would be for a very long time and that it was unlikely either of them would look for work and get a place of their own. M's mother and sister were insisting it was M's duty to rescue her sister (which she had done very often in the past), and M was torn between doing her "duty" and feeling taken advantage of. She dealt with her conflict, frustration and feelings of lack of control by eating. We decided to include a past life regression in her treatment, and discovered that in an earlier incarnation M was a orphaned boy named Mario in Puerto Rico. As this child grew up, he lived a very poor life. Unable to find work, he subsisted on what fruits he could scavenge and depended upon the kindness of strangers. In his young adulthood, Mario married, but could not provide for his wife and before long she died of complications from malnutrition. In his later years, a neighbor's son left food on his porch as often as he could spare it, and Mario lived out his days with just the company of his old dog and terrible feelings of grief, guilt and hunger. After moving through the death experience, M was flooded with the insight that she felt compelled to repay all those people who had helped her when she was Mario, and that the terrible energy of constant hunger had come with her to this life. After emerging from trance, we discussed how her need to help everyone who asked her because of an undercurrent of guilt feelings was keeping her from moving forward in her life, and in some instances -- such as her sister -- was enabling manipulative behavior. Three months after our session, M reported that she had lost all of her extra weight, and found herself able to say "no" without guilt.

Abundance
P wondered why she was unable to get over some of her limiting beliefs about money. Despite all of her hard work and visualization exercises, she felt herself unable to be comfortable around money and unable to save any. I asked her subconscious mind to take her to an incarnation where the origins of her troubles with money started, and P found herself in part of a caravan across a long, sandy, hot desert. She was in the habit of a nun, and was a traveling missionary "spreading the Good News to the heathen" in the Middle East. Digging deeper, P discovered that she had taken the veil as a young girl because she loved Christ very deeply, but at this time in her life, walking across the desert with dozens of other people and camels, she had aged into a somewhat more cynical woman. She understood she had taken a vow of poverty because it was safer for her, as a woman. "Being a nun was safe for me too, as I didn't have to have an intimate relationship with anyone. I was afraid of men, and if I was poor and a nun it was a safer way to live." P found however that she judged people by how much they gave and what they gave her (in coins, hospitality and protection). After moving through the death experience, P was able to release herself from this holy and important vow of poverty. She expressed gratitude for the lessons she learned, and was able to see that while that vow served her perfectly back then, it was not serving her now, and she could be free of it and feel safe and abundant. One year after this regression, P is the owner of her own business which is flourishing, has a substantial savings account, is able to take calculated risks in her business and therefore able to grow, and is cheerfully tithing 10% of her income.

Pain
L had chronic pain in his neck that no amount of chiropractic care or massage could manage to alleviate. His doctors were recommending fusion of some vertebrae, but were not guaranteeing it would relieve his pain completely. L had decided to try everything he could before undergoing such an invasive procedure. When he came to see me he was nervous about the regression experience. We did a simple regression in this life first, so he could understand the process and how he would experience the session. I sent him home with a tape to listen to so he could "practice," and when he returned the next week he went very easily into a trance. Asking his higher self to guide him to the incarnation in which this pain began, L found himself to be a young man in the "wild west." He was a person who was easily influenced and eager to belong, and against a twinge of better judgement, soon fell in with a group of bank robbers. They were woefully unsuccessful, and L was captured and jailed and sentenced to death at the age of 19. He was hanged within days of his trial, and as we moved through the death experience, I asked L how he felt about the life he'd just lived and he said "God, it was pain in the neck!" His spirit felt like all that effort in life had been wasted because he just followed the crowd instead of his own good instincts. After our session, L remarked that he'd seen some similar traits in his current incarnation, and vowed to start standing up for himself. I checked in with him 6 months after our regression and he had remained pain-free since that day and had stopped letting himself get dragged into social situations where he didn't feel comfortable.

What about progression?
Consider this: all time happens at once. My teacher gave me this metaphor to help visualize this concept. Imagine you're in a traffic helicopter, and you're hovering directly over an intersection, looking straight down. The activity you see directly below you is your present incarnation. The cars that have already driven past are your past lives, and those heading towards the intersection are your future lives. All of this traffic exists at the same time -- you are just focusing on the section directly beneath you.

With this in mind, realize that we can also use Progression -- going forward into your next lives, or just into next year -- to discover how you've solved a problem you're having now. Or you can use Progression to help realize a goal you've set for yourself.

The healing properties of Regression and Progression are truly amazing.

Can I have a past life regression just for fun ?
Why not! If you're curious about the PLR experience and have no particular issue you'd like to address, I can act as your tour guide, taking you back through several incarnations where you can visit your former lives.

Whatever the reason a client decides to have a regression to a past life, he or she is always amazed with the experience. Seeing loved ones over and over again gives a terrific perspective on the soul's eternity; your problems in this life -- if you have any -- can truly be seen for what they are: lessons in growth.

For a very fascinating (and scientific) book on past life regression, I highly recommend Dr. Brian Weiss' Many Lives, Many Masters. Dr. Weiss was once firmly entrenched in a clinical approach to psychiatry, but finds himself reluctantly drawn into past-life therapy when a hypnotized client suddenly reveals details of her previous lives.

I am a member in good standing of the International Association for Regression Research & Therapies (IARRT), the first professional organization for regression practitioners since 1985.
